We, the Caplan family, have been members of K.I. for many years. Since we had family at K.I. and had visited and found K.I. to be a comfortable place, we decided to join our family here. Namely they are: my mother and late father, Betty and Norman Caplan, Alav Hashalom, and our aunts and uncles, Margaret and Jerry Nerman, Lillian and the late Oscar Rubin, of blessed memory, and my cousin Lewis Nerman, who has since married the former Sue Seidler. My better half, Cathy, and I are both graduates of the Shawnee Mission High Schools—Cathy from SM West and I from SM South.
Cathy works in credit, collections, and fraud and forgery with Mainstreet Credit Union, dealing with most of their fraud and forgery issues. I have been a sales representative for Zep, Inc. for over 25 years.
We had three terrific kids, Dana Allison, Hannah Caplan, and Sarah Caplan. Dana, very sadly passed away over a year ago. Dana worked in the Olathe School District, working with children with a variety of challenges. She was always respected and appreciated by those she worked with both at the school district and her part-time job at Target. Our family is working hard to recover from the loss of a child and like everyone else this includes good days and bad. Our daughters Hannah and Sarah have both been students at the Hyman Brand Hebrew Academy since kindergarten and attended the CDC preschool at the JCC before that. Both girls are excellent students, play sports, and have been active with BBYO.
My service to K.I. began when the late Tom Magariel, of blessed memory, a past president and a gentleman I really respected, asked me to get involved as a vice president. The Magariel family has a history of service to the shul, and I have had the pleasure of serving with Tom’s son David in years past. I have been active on various committees over the years including membership, dues, a young adult initiative, and assisting with the endowment committee. I have worked in each and every administration since Tom’s. In all the years since becoming active at K.I., I have had the pleasure of working with some extremely talented people, who all had the continued success of K.I. at heart. A fabulous thing I have seen with each administration is the attention to continuous improvement, greater visibility of officer and board decisions, and the overwhelming desire to put K.I. into a position of strength for our long term viability. I look forward to continuing to work with our members and board to ensure the long-term viability of K.I.
